Falls and Falls Prevention

Needing a walking aid

If you live in Edinburgh you can self-refer for a walking aid assessment by visiting:

Self-Referral: Physiotherapy and completing the Adult Walking Aid Form

Needing an urgent assessment by an Occupational therapist or Physiotherapist

If you feel an assessment from an occupational therapist and/or physiotherapist is required please phone social care direct on 0131 200 2338

Occupational therapists prevent falls by holistically assessing individuals and their environments, then implementing tailored strategies like home modifications (handrails, lighting), recommending assistive devices (grabbers, shower chairs), improving physical function (strength/balance exercises), training on safe daily routines, and addressing psychological factors like fear of falling to help people stay independent and safe

Physiotherapists play a crucial role in falls prevention by creating personalised plans that improve strength, balance, and mobility through tailored exercises (like squats, lunges, balance drills) and gait training, while also assessing home safety, recommending mobility aids, teaching safe movement, and boosting confidence to help individuals stay independent and reduce fall risk
